Karnataka Former Chief Minister SM Krishna passes away (1932-2024)

In 1962, Krishna was elected to the legislative assembly for the first time.

SM Krishna’s Political Journey

After more than 45 years with the Congress, SM Krishna left the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017. In 1968, the politician was elected to the Lok Sabha, marking his first appearance in Parliament. In 1972, SM Krishna decided to go back to state politics even though he had also been elected to the fifth Lower House. Following his election to the legislative council, he served as the minister of parliamentary affairs, industry, and commerce from 1972 until 1977.

Krishna later returned to the Lok Sabha in 1980. From 1983 to 1984, he was the Minister of State for Industry; from 1984 to 1985, he was the Minister of State for Finance. From 1989 until 1992, he was the Karnataka Legislative Assembly’s Speaker. After that, in 1996, Krishna was elected to the Rajya Sabha, where he served till October 1999.

During this time, Krishna also served on the Indian mission to the UN in 1982. He served as a delegate to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Seminar in Westminster, UK, in 1990. Following his tenure as Karnataka’s chief minister from October 1999 to May 2004. SM Krishna assumed leadership of Maharashtra as its governor in December 2004.

During his more than 60-year career, Krishna served as the External Affairs Minister in the UPA government from 2009 to 2012, which was led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the time. Interestingly, the Congress-affiliated veteran statesman severed his 46-year ties with the old party in 2017 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He claimed that the Congress was in a “state of confusion” when he left. A few months prior to the Karnataka assembly elections in 2023, Krishna declared his intention to step away from active politics.

‘Brand Bengaluru’

Among all of them, Krishna is best recognized for his efforts as the chief minister of Karnataka and the advocate of “Brand Bengaluru”. The information technology (IT) industry in Bengaluru expanded as a substitute for Silicon Valley in California during his time as Karnataka’s chief minister, creating jobs for thousands of young people.

Krishna wrote to Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister at the time, in 2022. He was urging him to take decisive action to safeguard the “Brand Bengaluru.” He had proposed the reorganization of the Bangalore Agenda Task Force (BATF). Which was established by the Krishna government in 1999 and was made up of professionals from a range of fields to create a development plan for the city.
